This winter, FFA members have been actively practicing and competing in numerous Career Development Events (CDE), which are competitive events that allow members to apply classroom knowledge into real-world scenarios. Numerous students have participated in CDEs this winter.

The Public Speaking CDE is a CDE that has been broken down into different categories. The CDEs that were done by this year’s members are the Extemporaneous, FFA Creed, and Beginning Prepared speaking contests.

In the Extemporaneous contest, students pick a random topic, have 30 minutes to research it, then present a 4-6 minute speech on their topic of choice to a panel of judges. In this contest, Bree Hayden placed first in the county, first in the district, and in the top 20 in the state.

Scott McKenzie also competed and placed second in the county and 10th in the district.

In the FFA Creed Speaking contest, first-year FFA members compete against each other by saying the Creed and answering questions. In this contest, Emery Wensink placed first in the county and sixth in the district, and Addison Hannan placed second in the county and third in the district.  In the Beginning Prepared contest, contestants write a 4-6 minute speech beforehand, then present it to judges. Gavin Richards placed third in the county in this contest.

In the General Livestock CDE, students evaluate livestock animals. As a team, Eastwood FFA members placed fourth in District 1. Thirteen students participated. Kennedy Ameling placed 18th, and Gavin Richards placed 8th individually.

Eastwood FFA members participated in the General Livestock and Equine Career Development Events.

In the Equine CDE, numerous contestants judge horses and take a test. Five Eastwood FFA members participated, with Frances Lockyer placing seventh and Alivia Cox placing 11th individually.

The Greenhand Quiz is a test where first-year FFA members compete against others from Ohio by taking a test about the history of FFA.  The Eastwood freshmen competed against each other at the Greenhand ceremony. The team placed sixth in the district and 35th in the state out of over 150 competing schools.

In the Nature Interpretation CDE, students take a 50-question test and identify different items in nature. Three Eastwood FFA members participated; Cameron Brinker placed first and Charlotte Smith placed sixth in the District CDE. They placed fourth as a team.

Two FFA members also competed in the Wildlife Management CDE.

In the Farm Business Management CDE, students act like they are in charge of a farm and solve problems on a test. The team, comprised of 19 chapter members, placed fifth in district, and 44th in state.
