Free ‘Smart Salting’ workshop to help residents, professionals prepare for winter

From CITY OF BOWLING GREEN

As winter approaches, the city of Bowling Green invites residents and snow removal professionals to learn how to use road salt more effectively while protecting local waterways.

A free “Smart Salting” workshop will be held on Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 – 11 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial Building, 520 Conneaut Ave. This workshop is free to attend and is recommended for snow removal professionals, water quality professionals, snowplow drivers, and homeowners.

Whether someone is responsible for clearing roads and parking lots or just keeping their driveway and sidewalks safe, this workshop will offer information about smarter salting practices. Attendees will learn about the environmental impacts of road salt, strategies for using salt more efficiently, and the benefits of alternative application methods.

The workshop will feature two guest speakers offering both scientific insight and practical experience. Attendees will hear from Dr. William Hintz, professor from the University of Toledo, as well as Dan Calcamuggio, operations manager at the Wood County Engineers Office. Hintz will share the impacts of salt on the environment, while Calcamuggio will share information about smart salting practices and use of liquid treatments.

Smart salting is one of the subjects targeted through the Lake Erie Starts Here campaign, a regional partnership focusing on keeping pollution out of storm drains and Lake Erie. To learn more about these topics, visit the Lake Erie Starts Here website at https://www.lakeeriestartsherenwoh.org.
