Karen Emily Hakel died quietly in her sleep on September 24, 2026, at her residence in Toledo, Ohio.
Karen was a well-educated professional who despite her early interest in art, became an accomplished lawyer, returning to artistic pursuits primarily in retirement. A Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Minnesota, she studied law at Harvard, one of only 3 women admitted that year. Upon graduation she began 20 years of private practice in Washington DC, admitted to practice in DC, Maryland, Virginia, and before the U.S. Supreme Court. She next joined the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education, responsible for cases in Virginia, the Carolinas, and DC.
Upon retirement, Karen moved to Toledo. Here she quickly became a Docent of the Toledo Museum of Art, eventually serving as President of that group. She also joined the National Association of Retired Federal Employees where she served as its Vice President for Legislation. Active in the Metro Parks, she participated in many groups of paint artists.
Born on August 8, 1944, she was the first daughter of Milton and Emily Kovar Hakel. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carol, and brothers Kenneth, Roy, and Lee. She is survived by brother Milton Hakel Jr., sister-in-law Lee, niece Jen Horvath, nephew Lane Hakel, and more nephews, nieces, and cousins.
