Margaret "Micky" Hastings

Margaret Amy (Micky) McClure Hastings, age 87, of Bowling Green, Ohio, died January 10, 2020, preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Robert L. Hastings. She was born at home, the youngest of five children, near Lebanon, Ohio on Memorial Day, May 30, 1932 to Scott and Marian (Cowan) McClure. The McClure’s were very active in the Lebanon community. A Musical family, performing as “the Musical McClure’s” all over Warren County.

Micky graduated from Lebanon High School, Lebanon, Ohio in 1950 where she was very active in many organizations including chorus, band, theatre, Buckeye Girl’s State and yes… Prom Queen!

In 1953 she married her college sweetheart, Bob Hastings. They were both students at Otterbein University where they graduated together in 1954. At Otterbein, Micky sang in the Women’s Glee Club, was Freshman Queen, Homecoming Attendant, May Day Attendant, and Yearbook Queen. Following graduation with a BS in Education, Micky taught 1st grade in Wilmington, Ohio for one year before joining Bob in Hawaii where he was serving 2 years with the U.S. Army at Schofield Barracks. While in Hawaii, she taught 2nd grade in Wahiawa, a school near the Army Base.

She taught five more years, before staying home for twelve years to be with their three little boys. She said she didn’t want to miss out on anything they did while growing up. After the boys were older, Micky went back to teaching in Dallas, Texas, Columbia, Missouri, and North Baltimore, Ohio, the latter from which she retired in 1997. Years later she was asked to speak at the graduation of one of her first classes at North Baltimore. She was a recipient of the coveted Jennings Scholar award and selected as a member of Who’s Who among America’s Teachers.

Micky was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers of Wood County, Black Swamp Players Community Theatre Group, and a 25 year member of the “Pride of Toledo” Sweet Adelines International. As a member of the award winning “Pride” chorus, they won 11 first place regional medals and competed eleven times on the International Competition Stage, reaching as high as sixth in the world. She loved music, playing the piano, writing parodies, and attending all sorts of her sons and grandchildren’s athletic, dance, and other musical events. Oh, and let us not forget, that Micky had this special brownie recipe with yummy, homemade caramel icing that everyone loved and craved!

Micky may have been small in stature but she was huge of heart. She never had an unkind word for anyone, had scores of friends and touched many of us in many different ways. She considered herself a very lucky person with a very special family. She is survived by in Texas, Robert Ralph “Pepper” Hastings and wife Cheryl, sons Drew and Scott; Timothy Lee Hastings and wife Liza, sons Lucas and Sam.
