One-act play explores trauma of sexual assault victim being cross-examined

Novel Blends

A staged reading of the one-act play, “I Dream Before I Take the Stand,” will be presented at Novel Blends, 116 S. Main St. downtown Bowling Green, Sunday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct.  23 at 6 p.m. each night.

In the play written by Arlene Hutton, a defense lawyer cross examines a woman during her testimony in a sexual assault case. In doing so, the lawyer attempts to horribly distort her perfectly innocent walk in the park. This 30-minute reading portrays how survivors can be re-victimized when they work to hold their perpetrators accountable.

The play features Heath Huber and Gabriele Southwell with Melissa Shaffer directing.

This is a collaborative project with Cocoon and Novel Blends.

Reservations are not required for the free performance. Monetary donations will be accepted at the door to benefit programs and services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
