Final phase of South Main Street improvement project in BG nears completion

South Main Street improvement plans

Crews are completing the paving of the intermediate layer of asphalt on the inside lanes of South Main Street in Bowling Green as part of the final phase of the improvement project. Beginning the week of Nov. 3, traffic will shift back to the inside lanes so that the final course of asphalt can be applied to the outside lanes.

Once the outside lanes are paved, traffic will then flip back to the outside lanes so that the final course of asphalt can be applied to the inside lanes. Weather permitting, pavement striping is anticipated to occur around mid-November.

As previously noted, there has been a delay in the delivery of equipment for the new traffic signal/pedestrian crossing equipment. Installation of this equipment will occur once materials arrive.

Temporary traffic control measures will remain in place until all equipment is installed. In addition, trees are still expected to be planted this fall or early spring, following completion of the contractor’s work in the area.

Improvements at a Glance

This final phase builds on earlier waterline replacement work completed in 2024 and includes:

  • Curb, sidewalk, and ADA ramp repairs.
  • A new separated shared use path on the west side between Napoleon and Gypsy Lane.
  • Road widening and dedicated left-turn lanes at the South Main/Napoleon intersection.
  • Installation of two Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons between Gypsy Lane and Napoleon.
  • Planting of approximately 80 new trees along the corridor.
