On Friday, Nov. 21, the community gathered, despite drizzle, to watch the community tree lighting. Festivities began at the Wood County District Public Library with a holiday storytime in The Children’s Place. Maria Simon, the library’s youth services coordinator, and volunteers read “The Perfect Tree” aloud to the children. People then migrated outside to listen to the Madrigals perform holiday songs, including “Silent Night” in German, English, and American Sign Language.
As the courthouse clock struck 7 p.m., a flashing firetruck pulled up to the library and out came Mayor Mike Aspacher and his special guest Dylan Crawford. Dylan Crawford is a kindergartener at Kenwood Elementary and is the daughter of Andrew and Katie Crawford. They made their way to the stage and began their countdown. “3 …. 2 … 1 … ” Once Dylan flipped the switch, the tree was lit.
Afterward, people made their way back into the library for a full holiday performance from the Madrigals. Michele Raine, deputy director of Wood County District Public Library, said this is one of her favorite times of year and thanked everyone for joining the festivities.
