Bowling Green City Schools Earn statewide recognition from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce

From BOWLING GREEN CITY SCHOOLS

Bowling Green City Schools (BGCS) is proud to announce that all five district buildings – Bowling Green High School, Bowling Green Middle School, Conneaut Elementary, Crim Elementary, and Kenwood Elementary – have earned the Silver Award for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. This marks a significant achievement for the district, as all buildings earned a Bronze Award in 2024 and are now being recognized at the Silver level for the first time.

Because each BGCS building achieved Silver distinction, the district as a whole has also been honored with an Ohio PBIS District Award, the only level of recognition available for districts statewide.

Ohio’s PBIS Recognition System celebrated schools and districts that demonstrate high-quality and faithful implementation of PBIS, a research-based framework that promotes positive school climate and supports academic, social, and behavioral success for all students. Schools may earn Bronze, Silver, Gold, or district-level awards based on their progress and fidelity to PBIS practices.

What PBIS means for students and staff

PBIS guides schools in selecting and implementing evidence-based practices that build positive behavior, reduce disciplinary incidents, and increase instructional time. When implemented effectively, PBIS helps eliminate barriers to learning and supports students, families, and educators through a proactive approach to teaching expectations and creating consistent, positive environments.

Achieving Silver recognition indicates that BGCS schools have built a strong Tier 1 PBIS foundation and have also demonstrated success with Tier 2 supports, such as mentoring programs, counseling groups, and check-in/check-out initiatives.

A multi-year commitment to excellence

The PBIS process requires a long-term commitment – typically three to eight years – to build, refine, and sustain systems with fidelity. BGCS staff have demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and dedication to consistency in behavioral expectations and support structures.

Superintendent Ted Haselman praised their dedication, saying, “This achievement is a testament to the hard work, commitment, and care of our staff, the building PBIS teams, and administrators put into creating positive, supportive environments for students each day. Their consistent efforts have made this achievement possible. I’m proud of their efforts and the impact they have on our school community.”

“The buildings have worked really hard to get that designation,” Danya Claes, student wellness coordinator, added. “Gold is the next level, and we are actively working toward that.”
