From GRAND RAPIDS HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Grand Rapids Town Hall Committee, a branch of the Grand Rapids Historical Society, is presenting Oscar Wilde’s best-known comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The show will run March 27 through March 29 at the Historic Grand Rapids Town Hall Theatre. Friday and Saturday’s performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday’s performance will begin at 2 p.m.
Earnest tells of Jack and Algernon, two Victorian gentleman, and the false identities they create to escape obligations and pursue romance. But as their deceptions catch up to them, the gentlemen realize they may be in over their heads. This tale of love, lies, and misplaced handbags boasts a tight cast of eight actors from Grand Rapids, Bowling Green, Toledo, Napoleon, and beyond.
“There is incredible energy with this cast,” said director Faith Carroll. “The play has so many jokes, from clever wordplay to some really ridiculous physical comedy. This cast is just as adept with both.”
The theater in the Grand Rapids Town Hall is used by many community organizations, including Horizon Youth Theatre and Bittersweet Farms. In addition, Grand Rapids Town Hall Committee hosts events, including concerts, comedians, escape rooms, sing-alongs, speakers, and two theatrical productions annually, a play in early spring and a summer musical.
Any proceeds from the production will go toward continued restoration efforts to Grand Rapids Town Hall. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at the door, in-person at The Village Orchard in Grand Rapids, or through Grand Rapids Town Hall on Facebook.
