Toledo Opera, WCDPL present ‘The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish’ for free

From WOOD COUNTY DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY

What happens if a young bear is eager to catch their first fish, but they can’t remember how? In this 45-minute, high-energy adaptation of a Lakota legend, Toledo Opera tells the story of Mato, a bear who lives in the Great Lakes on the first day of spring. “The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish” will be presented on Friday, May 8, at 10 a.m., at the Wood County District Public Library, 251 N. Main St., Bowling Green.

The opera tells the story of Mato as he journeys through the forests surrounding the Great Lakes. As he wanders, he encounters a variety of animal friends who teach him about fishing and the ecosystems of the Great Lakes region.

This original opera blends storytelling with scientific education, introducing young audiences to concepts like aquatic habitats, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship. With its captivating music by Matthew Fossa and a meaningful message in the libretto by Joshua Borths, “The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish” is designed to inspire curiosity and a love for the arts and the natural world.

The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
