Bowling Green State University will host a series of events to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, featuring flag placement, a stair climb, memorial photo walk, tree planting, and community service.
Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. the BGSU soccer team will place flags on the University Hall lawn.
On Sept. 11, the university will host multiple events throughout the day:
- 7 a.m. – Stair climb at the Stroh Center
- Following a short presentation in which first-responders will be recognized and colors presented by BGSU ROTC, students, faculty and staff, and community members will complete a 40-minute stair walk/climb. The ceremony will begin at 7 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 7:30 a.m. The BGSU ROTC 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, so that others might live. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.
- 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. – Memorial photo walk on Bowen-Thompson Quad
- Drawing from the University Archives, 25 photographs will be displayed outside University Hall, offering a glimpse into the people, places, and emotions that shaped Sept. 11, 2001, on campus.
- 9 a.m. – noon – Veteran flag honoring at Oak Grove Cemetery
- Volunteers will straighten flag displays and place American flags at the sites of first responders and veterans at Oak Grove Cemetery.
- 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Christian mission ornament-making at the Union Oval
- Volunteers and participants will make ornaments for veterans and deployed service members.
- 1 – 3 p.m. – Tree planting outside of the Jerome Library and East Hall
- Volunteers will plant nine trees in front of the Veterans Memorial on campus to commemorate Sept. 11.
Volunteer events are made possible with a $22,000 grant from the 9/11 Day Foundation, a partner of AmeriCorps, to the C. Raymond Marvin Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance is part of a larger effort to engage BGSU students in community service, which has collectively led to over 300,000 hours of community service in the past four years.
