As of today’s 4 p.m. filing deadline at the Wood County Board of Elections, four challengers have turned in petitions to run against the incumbent Bowling Green mayor and city council members.
The board of elections has scheduled a meeting Thursday at 1:30 p.m. to certify those candidates who will appear on the ballot. Since there are no races that include multiple candidates from the same political party, there will be no contested races on the primary election ballot in Bowling Green on May 2.
Following are the candidates who filed in each race as of the deadline today:
Mayor
- Democratic incumbent Michael Aspacher, 206 Larchwood Drive.
- Republican challenger Tim J. Stechschulte, 805 Lelandford Circle.
Council at-large
- Democratic incumbent Jeffery J. Dennis, 217 Clay St.
- Republican challenger Douglas Simpson, 715 Conneaut Ave.
First Ward Council
- Republican challenger David Drain, 228 E. Court St.
- Democratic incumbent Nick Rubando, 220 E. Court St.
Second Ward Council
- Unopposed Democratic incumbent Joel O’Dorisio, 1001 Napoleon Road.
Third Ward Council
- Democratic incumbent Rachel Phipps, 920 Clark St.
- Republican challenger Karen Trent, 405 Sand Ridge Road.
Fourth Ward Council
- Unopposed Republican incumbent William J. Herald, 1030 Conneaut Ave.
Wednesday was also the filing deadline for Perrysburg City Council candidates. Perrysburg does not have council wards, so the top four vote getters among the six on the ballot will win seats on city council.
The Perrysburg candidates are: Cory B. Kuhlman, Sue Larimer, Jan K. Materni, Timothy C. McCarthy, Richard Rettig, and Kerry Wellstein. Two candidates – Deborah L. Born and Roberto Vela Jr. – had filed but were not certified by the board of elections.
The only issue filed for the primary election in the county was a request by Eastwood Local School District for a 2-mill tax levy renewal for general permanent improvements.
