Retired BG teacher urges voters to support income tax since thriving school district benefits all

While I do not have children of my own, I have had the pleasure of teaching many of your children and their children in the BG school district during my career. Supporting the school system continues to be a personal commitment. I am heartened to see the bright red signs in support of the school levy as I walk through the neighborhoods of Bowling Green. Community support is needed to continue educating and preparing our district’s students.

If you want to see how your school tax monies enrich our students, just scroll through the district’s Facebook page (facebook.com/BGSchools) and see the accomplishments by our young athletes in cross-country, football, and volleyball, honors awarded to our talented musicians and vocalists by the OMEA, and field trips scheduled so our students learned about wind turbines and experienced the Detroit Jazz Festival. Learn how high school students are participating in the “Pass it on Challenge,” a competition with Sylvania Northview to fill a GoodWill Industries truck with the most clothing, household goods, and furniture, while at the elementary level, 5th graders are preparing for Michindoh’s Outdoor Education Program. It’s exciting to witness the opportunities available to our students through the schools.

These educational experiences are only a few of the ways we support the students — and especially support the future of our whole community. Plus, a school district that is thriving is good for ALL of us — not just those who have students in the schools at the moment. Clearly, our students continue to be prepared, mentored, involved, and challenged by our schools as reinforced by these activities and experiences. I am voting for the operating levy on November 5th because it is an investment in the futures of the children and grandchildren of my former students.
