BG Police arrest Detroit man who allegedly has pattern of presenting fake paperwork at title offices

A Detroit man was arrested at the Wood County Title Office on Tuesday afternoon, and charged with tampering with records.

Bowling Green Police were dispatched to the title office, at 1616 E. Wooster St., after Derrick Woods, 48, reportedly presented fraudulent paperwork for a stolen Chevy Silverado.

Police contacted the Ohio State Highway Patrol Vehicle Theft and Fraud Unit, which reported that Woods had allegedly been purchasing vehicles in Michigan by using fraudulent funds to pay the financial institutions holding the liens. The financial institutions would not know immediately that the funds were fraudulent, so they would notify the vehicle seller that the money was received.

After Woods would take possession of the vehicle, he reportedly would take the vehicle to Ohio where he titled the vehicles using a forged lien release letter from the lien holder. Seven to 10 days after the transfer of the fraudulent funds, the bank would become aware that the funds were fraudulent and notify the lien holder. By that time Woods allegedly would have already sold the vehicles to an unsuspecting third party.

Woods was taken to Wood County Jail.
