BG resident shocked over anti-renter sentiment expressed during zoning discussions

I have been dismayed by the public comments regarding Bowling Green’s zoning code update. The way folks have spoken about renters has been shocking. I have been very surprised to hear multiple people insist there are certain people who should be kept out of their neighborhoods.

Bowling Green has previously prided itself on being a welcoming community. It is difficult to view these comments as anything other than a large ‘Keep Out’ sign for anyone who may be unable to afford to purchase a home, including the young people the city would like to attract.

I understand there have long been tensions between those who own versus rent. However, I believe recent comments have crossed a line into advocating for segregation. Concerns have not merely been about density or commercial activity but about any rental property in a residential area.

I hope the City will protect the rights of renters and continue to allow them to reside in any neighborhood they choose. I am also hopeful the new rental registration program will lead to improved conditions among rental units. Perhaps the legislation would have been stronger had these concerns been raised then.
