BG Rotary approves $7,200 grant for clean water and girl-friendly latrines for Uganda schools and towns

The Rotary Club of Bowling Green has approved a $7,200 grant from BG Rotary Club members and Rotary District 6600 to support the Kasiisi Project’s initiative in Kabarole District, Western Uganda. This grant will significantly aid the project’s efforts to provide clean water and girl-friendly latrines for rural Ugandan schools and their communities.

About the Kasiisi Project:

Founded in 1997, the Kasiisi Project, a 501(c)(3) organization in the U.S., works to preserve the biodiversity of Kibale National Park, a region renowned for its wildlife and ecological significance.

The project emphasizes a holistic approach encompassing education, conservation, and health, primarily engaging with 16 forest-edge primary schools. Over the years, the Kasiisi Project has made substantial progress in promoting conservation awareness and improving living conditions around Kibale National Park.

Project Overview:

The Kasiisi Project’s current proposal involves the installation of a borehole for clean drinking water and the construction of a girl-friendly latrine in local schools. This initiative addresses critical needs in the community, where many schools rely on unreliable rainwater catchment systems and face challenges in providing adequate sanitary facilities for girls.

Impact of the Project:

The implementation of these facilities will significantly benefit the community, enhancing access to clean water and supporting the education of young girls.

Previous successes include the drilling of six wells, with an 83% success rate, and the construction of 12 girl-friendly latrines, resulting in improved community health and academic performance.

Feasibility and Sustainability:

The Kasiisi Project brings expertise in drilling boreholes and constructing latrines, ensuring the project’s success and sustainability. A strong emphasis is placed on community involvement, with schools signing maintenance agreements and local communities contributing to the upkeep.

The Rotary Club of Bowling Green’s commitment:

The members of the Rotary Club of Bowling Green support this initiative, recognizing the profound impact it will have on improving living conditions and education in Western Uganda.

The club remains committed to supporting projects that align with Rotary’s areas of focus, particularly those that promote clean water, sanitation, and education.

Verification and Measurement:

The project’s progress and effectiveness will be verified through on-site observations and regular impact assessments by Rotarian representatives.
