Memphis player charged following incident in aftermath of WNIT game in Stroh

Bowling Green State University is pursuing criminal charges against a University of Memphis women’s basketball player who allegedly punched a Falcon player during post-game handshakes.

BGSU’s Athletic Department issued the following statement:

“Following Thursday’s unwarranted physical incident after the WNIT home game, the Bowling Green State University Police Department has charged a member of the Memphis Women’s Basketball team with assault. Additionally, BGSU Athletics is conducting its own review. Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well. This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor, and no further comment is available at this time.”

Media reports identified the Memphis player as Jamirah Shutes. Elissa Brett was identified as the BGSU player she struck.

The incident occurred after the Falcons 73-60 win in the Super 16 round of the Women’s National Invitational tournament. The game was played in Bowling Green.
