BGSU to host inaugural American history, civics seminar for Ohio K-12 educators from June 1-5

From BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the Democracy and Public Policy Network at Bowling Green State University will hold its inaugural professional development seminar from June 1 – 5 for Ohio K-12 teachers focused on bolstering American history and civics education in their classrooms.

As part of the network’s new CIVICS 250 Scholars Program, the weeklong seminar will bring together 30 teachers from school districts across Northwest Ohio to collaborate with and gain expert insight from BGSU faculty to enhance their curriculum in American government and politics.

Participating teachers will also take part in “Document Days,” where they will learn how to incorporate America’s founding documents – including the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, the anti-Federalist Papers, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights – into their lessons to deepen student understanding and comprehension of the nation’s history.

With support from the U.S. Department of Education, the network’s CIVICS 250 Scholars Program is building nonpartisan learning communities among K-12 educators across the region over the next three years to develop educational lessons and resources centered on the nation’s foundational principles, including the ideas, traditions, and institutions essential to understanding American government and history.
