From WOOD COUNTY DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Wood County District Public Library, in partnership with Bowling Green State University, will host author and scholar Marla R. Miller for a talk on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. She will give a presentation based on her book, “Betsy Ross and the Making of America,” followed by a question-and-answer session. This program is free and open to the public and will take place in the library atrium. No reservation is required.
Miller’s talk is part of the “Threads of Democracy” project from BGSU’s Department of History. The project, which aims to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, is heavily influenced by Miller’s book.
From BGSU: “In her talk, ‘Betsy Ross: The Life Behind the Legend,’ Miller will draw on decades of research into women and work, gender, and artisanry in early America, to consider ‘Betsy Ross’ and the making of the first flag against the context of Elizabeth Griscom Ross’s lived experience in Revolutionary Philadelphia and the decades that followed. Along the way, she will consider how we know what we know about Ross and other early American craftswomen, and the ways the present always shapes our questions about the past.”
