Move for supermajority approval of amendments passes Ohio Senate

The Ohio Senate approved Senate Joint Resolution 2 that would require any citizen initiated constitutional amendment to pass with 60 percent of the vote on a party-line 26-7 vote.

State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) was a sponsor of the bill.

The GOP plan is to revive the August election, which was done away with last year, so the new 60-percent limit would be in place when a vote on an amendment that would enshrine abortion rights comes up for a vote in November.

The House has yet to vote on SJR2.
