Pair charged with stealing Pokemon cards and leading BG Police on high speed chase

Bowling Green Police Division was led on a chase that exceeded 105 mph on Interstate 75 by a couple who allegedly stole $285 worth of Pokemon cards from the Walmart on East Gypsy Lane Road.

Nicholas Starkey, 32, Fremont, was charged with theft/shoplifting, failure to comply, and criminal tools. Kayla Canova, 31, Findlay, was charged with theft/shoplifting and criminal tools.

Sunday, around 2:10 p.m., police were called about two people in Walmart stocking up on Pokemon cards. According to asset protection officials, the two people had stolen from the store in the past.

The couple reportedly exited using the automotive entrance, and got in a red Chevy Impala. Police activated their overhead lights and sirens, but the Impala continued southbound on Ohio 25, turned eastbound on U.S. 6, then southbound on Interstate 75.

According to the police report, Starkey exceeded 105 mph, and drove off the left and right shoulders of I-75 to pass vehicles. The car was at least a quarter mile ahead of the officer in pursuit, the report said.

Starkey reportedly got off I-75 at the Cygnet Road exit, where his vehicle spun out at the top of the ramp. The car then continued westbound on Cygnet Road to Rudolph Road, where it failed to stop at the stop sign, and turned southbound on Rudolph Road.

The Chevy continued southbound on Rudolph Road in excess of 100 mph. The officer notified dispatch when the vehicle reached North Baltimore. The officer stated he saw the vehicle turn east onto East Broadway, but then lost the vehicle. The pursuit was discontinued.

Back at BGPD, officers were able to identify the pair in the Impala as Starkey and Canova. Starkey had a warrant from Seneca County.

An officer with Fostoria Police Department said he had been contacted by another investigator at the Walmart in Findlay, where the pair was also suspected of stealing trading cards.
