From SILVER CROSS CIRCLE OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF THE KING’S DAUGHTERS & SONS
The Silver Cross Circle of the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons has continued its 119th year of service to the Wood County community by providing local students and teachers with award-winning books. Because of the Silver Cross Circle and BGSU Arts Unlimited fund, kindergarten through second grade students and teachers in Bowling Green City Schools will each receive a copy of the 2025 Caldecott Medal-winner, “Chooch Helped.”
Written by Andrea L. Rogers and illustrated by Rebecca Lee Kunz, the book follows a young girl as she navigates being a big sister to her toddler brother, Chooch. Kunz will be speaking at BGSU in September as part of the BGSU In the Round guest speaker series and in partnership with the Wood County District Public Library.
The Silver Cross Circle’s contribution helps fulfill the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons’ aim to support children’s literacy. Founded in 1907 by Mary Hulbert Rogers, the local chapter has served Bowling Green and Wood County through outreach, including hosting annual season parties for residents at Wood Haven Health Center, book distributions, supporting other area nonprofit organizations, and providing scholarships to Navajo college students.
Two years ago, long-time member Marilyn (Lyn) Long invited the co-creators of In the Round to speak at one of the organization’s monthly meetings. Long saw the speaker series as a bridge between two of the Silver Cross Circle’s areas of support: children’s literacy and educational opportunities for Native American students. Though Long, who passed away in May, will not see young readers receive their books, her foresight and enthusiasm in connecting the Silver Cross Circle with In the Round made this opportunity possible. When “Chooch Helped” is passed out at the beginning of the new school year, it will be the most recent book distribution that the members of the Silver Cross Circle supported, enriching the local community.

Kunz will be speaking at BGSU in the Thomas B. and Kathleen M. Donnell Theatre, in the Wolfe Center for the Arts, on Friday, Sept. 18, at 5:30 p.m., and at the Wood County District Public Library atrium on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. Book-signings will follow each talk. Both talks are free and open to the public.
