Who’s getting COVID in Wood County? 80% of cases involve unvaccinated people

The majority of people testing positive for COVID in Wood County are unvaccinated.

As COVID cases continue climbing in Wood County, the Wood County Health Department is again tracking information on those testing positive.

On Thursday, the health department reported that the county had seen three new deaths, eight more hospitalizations, and 173 new cases of COVID just since Monday.

Here is some more detailed information from Wood County Health Department Public Information Officer Beth Peery on the recent cases:

  • Over the past month (Aug. 2 – Sept. 2), approximately 80% of cases were in people who had not completed a COVID-19 vaccine series.
  • 24 patients were hospitalized with COVID in Wood County, from June 1 to Aug. 31. Of those, 19 were unvaccinated with an age range of 15 to 83 years. Five were vaccinated with an age range of 49-88 years.
  • The median age of people who tested positive for COVID from June 1 – Aug. 31 was 31 years old among unvaccinated, and 49 years old among vaccinated.
  • Cases are going up in all age groups, and the age distribution is about the same as it was a month ago. About 25% of cases in Wood County are in the 20-29 year old age group.

As of today, 55.46% of Wood County’s population has been vaccinated. That’s 72,549 people who have gotten at least their first vaccine dose.

The percent of the population fully vaccinated in Wood County is:

  • 12 and older: 61.07%
  • 20 and older: 63.49%
  • 30 and older: 70.99%
  • 40 and older: 74.91%
  • 50 and older: 79.41%
  • 60 and older: 85.17%
  • 65 and older: 88.13%

Wood County is now at 210.22 COVID cases per 100,000 residents, keeping the county in the high transmission range.

During the last two weeks, the 400 COVID cases in the county broken down into ZIP Code areas show that all areas of the county are affected. The highest number of cases in the last two weeks were reported in Perrysburg, 106; Bowling Green, 103; North Baltimore, 31; Northwood, 24; Risingsun, 16; Luckey, 12; Bloomdale, 12; Fostoria, 11; Wayne, 11; Weston, 10; Rossford, 10; and Pemberville 10.

Some schools in the county have reported recent cases of COVID, including:

  • Elmwood, 5 students, 1 staff.
  • Northwood, 4 students.
  • Penta, 5 students.
  • Perrysburg, 9 students.
  • Rossford, 2 students.
