From WOOD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
In 2025, consumers lost $12.5 billion nationwide to scams. Criminal networks are stealing money though social media, phone calls, and texts posing as individuals people trust. Scammers pressure and demand money or personal information. Lately, bad actors have been posing as officers from local sheriff’s offices, according to Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.
If a post, call, or text feels wrong, people are encouraged to slow down and verify. They should hang up the phone, then investigate whether the call is legitimate. People should not click links that are not familiar to them or sent by a trusted source. It is also advised that people never send money to unverified sources.
If targeted, individuals are encouraged to contact law enforcement.
