From CITY OF BOWLING GREEN
The South Main Street improvement project is nearing completion, and users are advised of updates regarding newly installed traffic and pedestrian safety features.
New signals at Napoleon & South Main
Installation of the new traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersection of Napoleon Road and South Main Street is in its final stages. Activation is currently planned for overnight Wednesday, May 13, into Thursday, May 14. Police will be directing traffic in the intersection during the overnight/early morning hours while this work occurs.
Pedestrian hybrid beacons activated
The new pedestrian hybrid beacons (PHBs) along South Main Street are now active. These signals are designed to help pedestrians safely cross the roadway while maintaining efficient traffic flow.
How the PHBs work
For pedestrians:
- Push the crosswalk button and wait for the signal to activate.
- When the “WALK” symbol appears, be sure all traffic has stopped and proceed across the street.
- Do not begin crossing once the solid “DON’T WALK” symbol appears.
For motorists:
- Flashing yellow lights mean slow down and prepare to stop.
- Solid yellow means prepare to stop if it is safe to do so.
- Solid red means stop and remain stopped while pedestrians cross.
- Alternating flashing red lights mean drivers must stop, then may proceed when the crosswalk is clear – like a stop sign.
Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution as everyone becomes familiar with the new traffic patterns and signal operations.
Further updates
As a final reminder, asphalt repair work associated with the project is currently planned for late May. Earlier project communications referenced an April timeframe, but scheduling and weather adjustments have shifted this work later into the spring construction season.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by visiting the city’s capital projects map for updates on this and other infrastructure projects.
The city of Bowling Green thanks residents and motorists for their continued patience and cooperation as these improvements are completed.
