Special presentation explores the Battle of Lake Erie and its lasting impact on American history

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — The Ohio State Parks Foundation will welcome acclaimed presidential historian, bestselling author, and CNN & C-Span contributor Douglas Brinkley for a special America 250 commemorative event on the shores of Lake Erie this summer.
“The Battle of Lake Erie: Its Impact on Our Nation,” presented by Brinkley, will take place Sunday, Aug. 16, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Camp Perry Conference Center in Port Clinton. The event is part of the nationwide lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary celebration and will spotlight Ohio’s pivotal role in one of the most significant naval victories in United States history. Brinkley’s appearance is also part of the State Park Foundation’s new “History in the Parks” initiative. This initiative will provide for future historical events and the purchase of historical artifacts related to the parks and Ohio.
Situated along the same waters where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry secured a decisive American victory during the War of 1812, the event will explore how the Battle of Lake Erie helped shape the future of the nation and secure American control of the Great Lakes.
“Few places in America connect our natural landscapes and national history quite like Lake Erie,” said Dr. Marcia Sloan Latta, chair of the Ohio State Parks Foundation. “As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States, we’re honored to welcome Douglas Brinkley for an unforgettable afternoon of storytelling, history, patriotism, and reflection on the enduring importance of Ohio’s state parks and historic places.”
Brinkley, who grew up in nearby Perrysburg, Ohio, and graduated from The Ohio State University, is one of America’s most respected historians and authors, known for his bestselling books on U.S. presidents, conservation, leadership, and American history. His work frequently highlights the intersection of history, public lands, and the American spirit, making him a fitting speaker for this landmark event tied to both America 250 and Ohio’s outdoor heritage.

The event will be held at the historic Camp Perry Conference Center, located along the Lake Erie shoreline near the site of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie — a victory that became a defining turning point in the War of 1812.
