David Mac Speer

David Mac Speer “Dave”, born on August 25, 1936, passed away on April 13, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion. He was preceded in death by his parents, David Speer and Marjorie (Davis) Speer, his son, David, and his sister, Anne.

Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy, whom he married on December 29, 1994, and his children, Amy Speer, Andy (Sharon) Sykes, and Amy (Josh) Knauss. He was a cherished grandfather to Kylee, Tyler, Mack, Cooper, and Hannah, who brought him immense joy and pride.

Dave graduated from Conotton Valley High School, attended Geneva College, then served in the Air Force for four years.

Dave was a man of strong convictions and a deep commitment to his faith. He played an active role in his church community, where he met Cathy while singing in the church choir. Their love story was a testament to the power of faith and love.

Dave retired in 1993 after working for 33 years for the Department of Defense. This gave him more time to pursue his hobbies. He enjoyed playing the piano and trumpet, ballroom dancing, playing golf, and cooking. He loved woodworking, and made beautiful wooden toys for the grandchildren.

Dave loved talking to people. He was dubbed the “Mayor of Panera” in Westerville because he showed up there at opening six days a week and sat at “his” table by the fireplace, ready to talk to anyone who walked in the door.

Dave cherished the time spent with his family and the adventures they shared through travel. It was hard for him to be housebound these past few years as his physical and mental challenges increased. But he never lost his positive attitude, his sense of humor, or his appreciation for others who cared for him. He touched the lives of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.

Services to honor Dave’s life will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements are being handled by Hanneman Family Funeral Homes, Bowling Green.
