An inmate at the Wood County Jail died while in custody this past weekend.

Joseph R. Bechill, 33, of Toledo, was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday at 5:10 a.m. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies initiated and continued CPR until paramedics arrived. Bechill was pronounced dead by the EMS. The Lucas County Coroner is handling the autopsy.

“We don’t know the cause. We’ll find that out from the coroner,” Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said Sunday evening.

“It doesn’t appear there were any policies violated” at the jail, he added.

The inmate was booked at the jail Friday morning after being arrested by Northwood Police Department for vandalism, permitting drug abuse, and possession of criminal tools.

Wood County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the death, Wasylyshyn said.
