October is a month filled with traffic safety educational efforts. October is Pedestrian Safety Month and Safe Communities will be promoting Pedestrian Safety with multiple educational efforts surrounding this important topic.
October 15 – 21 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. Motor Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens 15-18 in the United States- ahead of all other types of injury, disease, and violence. Safe Communities is committed to reduce crashes involving youth in Wood County.
October 15 – 21 is also National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. This week is designed to encourage students to choose responsibility and take the opportunity to change the culture of binge drinking on-campus and off. Wood County Safe Communities reminds everyone that it never and option to drink and drive. No matter the amount of alcohol you’ve consumed, designate a sober driver or plan to use a public transportation method to make it safely to your destination.
October 16 – 20 is National School Bus Safety Week. Safe Communities will join in the efforts to prevent illegal school bus passing. Nearly every day, millions of children across the United States line up to ride the bus to school. The school bus is one of the safest modes of transportation, but illegal school bus passing poses a significant threat to children and their caretakers.
The month ends with Red Ribbon Week October 23 – 31. Join your local school to help promote this message in and around your community.
