Perrysburg man arrested for allegedly putting man in chokehold

A Perrysburg man was arrested for assault after he allegedly put a man in a chokehold in Bowling Green on Friday.

Ricardo Oviedo III, age 20, was charged with assault and obstructing official business and taken to Wood County Jail. Police discovered Oviedo also had two warrants out of Wood County Sheriff`s Office and Perrysburg Police Department.

The arrest came after a BGPD officer was approached by a man in the 100 block of East Wooster Street around 3:30 a.m.. According to the police report, the man was visibly distraught and unable to speak at first. He told police that he had been eating at a picnic table in the alley next to Insomnia Cookie, when a man he knew – Oviedo – allegedly put him in a chokehold. The man told police he was briefly rendered unconscious.

He reportedly pointed to Oviedo, who was still in the alley. The officer yelled at Oviedo to stop, but he reportedly began running northbound across Court Street and into an alley leading through the backyards of houses in the 200 block of North Prospect Street.

Other officers joined in the foot pursuit, and located Oviedo hiding under a stairway near the Wood County Courthouse.
