Shirley Hilyard

Shirley Hilyard, 89, passed away Friday, Aug. 18 at Bridge Hospice of Bowling Green. She was born Jan. 23, 1928 in Spearville, Kansas to Ross and Stella (Forbes) Nelson.

She was a registered nurse for 40 years, retiring in 1990 after 13 years as the office nurse for Bowling Green pediatricians Dr. Eva Schaff and Dr. Michael Lemon.

Shirley was active with many local organizations including American Cancer Society, Children’s Resource Center and Bowling Green Rotary Club, where she was the first woman to join the club in 1987. She was named the Wood County American Cancer Society Nurse of Hope in 1984 and was a Bowling Green Citizen of the Year in 1993.

She married Delmer M.Hilyard June 10, 1950. He preceded her in death in 1982. Also preceding her were her parents; brothers Ward, Blair and Wayne; and sisters Nellie (Warren) Deeds and Carol (John) Pearson, infant twin daughters Rebecca and Teresa, and daughter-in-law Susan Dennis.

She is survived by daughters Susan (Bob) Koss, Powell, Ohio, and Julie (Jack) Carle of Bowling Green; son, Scott Hilyard of Peoria, Illinois; and grandchildren Hannah Hilyard, Des Moines, Iowa; Matthew (Katie) Carle, Portland, Oregon; Emily (Adam) Hafer, Canton, Ohio; and Spenser Carle, Morrisville, North Carolina, and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday August 21, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 West Wooster Street.
