University Women welcome new year & new members with fall brunch

University Women of BGSU will begin the 2023-24 year with its annual fall brunch on Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Veteran’s Administration Building in BG City Park.  Any area women may attend to learn more about University Women, affiliation with the university is not required.

A catered box lunch will be provided by Call of the Canyon.  The lunch will include a club wrap with turkey, bacon, lettuce, cheese, and ranch dressing.  It also includes chips, fruit, and a cookie.

A vegetarian option is also available.  Bottled water and coffee will also be provided.  The cost of the  lunch is $12 and the money should be sent to Hilde Farrow at 1210 Alexandria Blvd.  Bowling Green, Ohio 43402.

The brunch will begin with a brief address by BGSU President Rodney Rogers, who will offer updates about happenings on campus.  In addition, there will be an entertaining speech by a  former BGSU student.  

Mary Lynne Pozniak will present four non-traditional students with University Women college

scholarships for the 2023-24 school year.  

The recipients are as follows:

  • Sarah Combs,  a senior from Findlay, who is pursuing a degree in Individualized Studies in the College of Education and Human Development with the intention of obtaining an Alternative Teaching License.  Sarah has five children and works as an Administrative Secretary for the Van Buren Local school district.  
  • Jennifer Cothern is a senior who lives in Bowling Green.  She is majoring in Social Work.  Jennifer is the founder and director of a non-profit retreat for birth mothers who have placed a child up for adoption called Fireweed Retreat.
  • Tiffany Lake is a senior who lives in Castalia.  Her major is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing RN to BSN.  She is currently working for the Sandusky Veteran Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
  • Brandy Pollick is a senior who lives in Sandusky.  She is majoring in a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care.  Brandy is employed as an EMT for Carroll Township Fire Department and Fisher Titus Hospital  as a Respiratory Therapist with a limited permit.  

Three of these students will receive a $2,000 scholarship and a fourth candidate who will  graduate in December will receive a $1,000 scholarship.  

A raffle and silent auction will also be held to help support the scholarships.

The brunch also provides members a chance to sign up for interest groups.  Among these are monthly  meetings devoted to travel, dining, book and movie discussions, antiques, knitting, bridge, and a docent led tour of the Toledo Art Museum.  There is also a choral and garden group.  New this year is a Monday morning informal  coffee group.
