BGSU Planetarium offers wide-ranging summer programs

From Christmas in July to poetry under the stars, the Bowling Green State University Planetarium offers a wide range of programs for visitors of all ages this summer.

Now through July 27, shows will be presented on Thursdays and Fridays at 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Christmas in July on Sunday (July 13) will bring back Christmastime favorites, “The Alien Who Stole Christmas” at 4:30 p.m. and “Secret of the Star” at 8:30 p.m.

For July 17 and July 20, the planetarium will offer two different trips through the Universe, one letter at a time: “Alphabet Universe,” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. on July 17 and July 20, while “A to Z Astronomy,” a full-dome video show inspired by “Alphabet Universe” and produced by the Daniel M. Soref Planetarium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will be at 4 p.m. on July 17 and 4:30 p.m. on July 20.

The final week of shows features “Firefall,” on July 24 at 4 p.m. and July 27 at 4:30 p.m. and “Cleopatra’s Universe” at 8:30 p.m. on July 24 and July 27.  “Firefall” explores the impact of celestial events on objects in the solar system, including the extinction of the dinosaurs on Earth. “Cleopatra’s Universe,” which explores the life and times of Cleopatra and the work of astronomers during ancient Egypt, is being shown for the first time at the BGSU Planetarium.

Dr. Kate Dellenbusch, planetarium director, also has a special program planned at 8:30 p.m . on Friday, July 25. called “Starlit Stanzas: Creative Poetry Writing Under the Dome.”  As part of the live program, guests will be encouraged to write their own poetry inspired by the night sky.

Rooftop stargazing will be offered following the 8:30 p.m. shows, weather permitting.
