BG nearing the end stretch of South Main Street waterline and road repair project

South Main Street construction in July

Now in its final phase, the South Main Street road and waterline project will include more than freshly paved roadway and new waterlines. When completed, the project will include 80 trees, a multi-use pathway, and two hybrid beacon pedestrian crossings.

The project began in 2024.

This final phase, launched in late June 2025, includes a full repaving of South Main Street from Ordway Avenue to the southern corporation limit, along with a series of critical improvements designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and overall travel experience for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Over the past month, crews have been preparing for paving by installing drainage systems, performing sidewalk and curb repairs, and building a separated shared use path along the west side of South Main between Napoleon Road and Gypsy Lane Road.

Significant roadwork is underway, with milling and concrete base repairs on the outside lanes expected to continue through the end of the month. Once complete, crews will apply an intermediate asphalt layer and temporary striping to shift traffic. In mid to late September, the traffic pattern will shift to the outside lanes as crews begin milling and repairing the inside lanes. The turn lane will not be maintained for this phase of the work and left turns will be prohibited.

Final paving for the entire corridor is anticipated to be complete by late October 2025, followed by remaining signal upgrades and finishing touches. This schedule is dependent on weather and construction progress.

South Main Street improvement plans

This final phase builds upon the earlier waterline replacement work completed in late 2024 and includes the following additional improvements:

  • Full repaving of South Main Street from Ordway Avenue to the southern corporation limit.
  • Curb, sidewalk, and ADA ramp repairs.
  • A new separated shared use path on the west side of South Main between Napoleon and Gypsy Lane.
  • Traffic signal replacement, road widening, and installation of dedicated left-turn lanes at the South Main/Napoleon intersection.
  • Installation of two Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons between Gypsy Lane and Napoleon.
  • Planting of approximately 80 new trees along the corridor.

Traffic impacts during construction:

  • One lane of travel in each direction will remain open throughout the project.
  • Access to homes and businesses will be maintained although temporary closures will be necessary when crews are performing work on driveways or directly adjacent to driveways.
  • Temporary detours and short-term intersection closures may occur as needed.
