Melvin R Nissen

Melvin R. Nissen (age 87) of Pemberville, Ohio passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Wood Haven Health Care in Bowling Green. He was born July 15, 1929 in Bradner, Ohio to Andrew and Julia (Sohajda) Nissen. After graduation from high school Melvin began his service to his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His military career began with his first full call to active duty during the time of WWII and later during the Korean War. He would eventually see full retirement from the 180th Ohio Air National Guard as a Master Sergeant in 1989. His proud and distinguished service of over 35 years rendered Melvin numerous Awards and Service Ribbons. Most notable in his life was on July 29, 1958 when he married Bernadette Obarski in Toledo. Together they would have four children. Melvin, in addition to his service career, maintained other work responsibilities that included being a Signal Operator with Ann Arbor Rail Road and as an Electronic Technician at the University of Toledo. All the while farming and working on tractors remained his passion at home. He was a member of the Pemberville Freedom Twp. American Legion Post #183, St. Michael Catholic Church in Gibsonburg and the Knights of Columbus. In his free time he enjoyed working with electronics of all kinds and being an amateur radio operator; call sign “K8DEE”.

Melvin is survived by his children: Randolph (Julie) Nissen of Pemberville, Christopher (Marta) Nissen of Merrimack, NH, Laurel (Charles) Hummel of Pemberville, grandchildren: Matthew Nissen, Michael (Brooke) Nissen, Joshua Nissen, Celia Nissen, Andrew Nissen, David Hummel, great grandchild: Chase Nissen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Bernadette, his parents, his infant daughter: Maria and his infant brother: Andrew J. Nissen Jr.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Marsh Funeral Home, 4094 State Route 105, Pemberville, OH. The Funeral Mass will be 1:00 PM Thursday, March 30, 2017 at St. Michael Catholic Church located at 317 E. Madison St. Gibsonburg, Fr. Christopher Bazar, Celebrant. Interment will be in Pemberville Union Cemetery, Pemberville. A bereavement luncheon will be held back at the church immediately following the cemetery committal services. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to: Heartland Hospice or St. Michael Catholic Church.
