Daniel Frederick Nehls

Daniel Frederick Nehls, 86, passed away June 26th, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work, and unwavering devotion to those he loved most.

Dan was born in Luckey, Ohio, to Adelbert and Winifred (Moenter) Nehls. He grew up alongside his sister, Dorothy Tracy, and brother, Alfred Nehls, and graduated from Troy-Luckey High School with the Class of 1957.

In 1961, Dan married Darlene Weng, in Luckey, Ohio. Together they built a beautiful life rooted in love, family, and faith, sharing countless memories through 64 years of marriage.

Dan proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. The young couple was stationed in Hawaii, where they welcomed their first son, David. Following his honorable service, Dan and Darlene returned to Ohio, settling in Pemberville, where they welcomed their second son, Douglas. In 1971, the family made Colorado their home, moving to Longmont, where their youngest son Dale was born. Dan remained a member of the American Legion for many years.

A skilled carpenter by trade, Dan was known for his strong work ethic, craftsmanship, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Whether building with his hands or offering quiet support, he approached life with humility and determination.

Dan found great joy in the Colorado mountains. He loved hiking, skiing, and spending time outdoors, appreciating God’s creation in every season. Above all else, he cherished attending the sporting events of his children, grandchildren, and later, his great-grandchildren.

His faith remained a cornerstone throughout his life. After moving to Longmont, Dan became a member of First Lutheran where he and Darlene were Senior High youth leaders and he enjoyed singing in the choir. He later became a member of Faith Community Lutheran Church. Early in 2026, Dan and Darlene relocated to Estes Park, where they attended Allenspark Community Church.

Dan also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid baseball and hockey fan and appreciated a good glass of whiskey.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Nehls, sons David (Shawna) of Manhattan, KS, Douglas (Suzie) of Hays, KS, and Dale (Toni) of Longmont, CO.

He also leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Brock (Ashley), Lyndie (Tony), Tarica (Trent), Taylor (Mary), Kamri (Jake), Alexis (Keenan), Ian, and Grant. His legacy continues through his eleven great-grandchildren: Kyndal, Hattie Jo, Finley, Hudson, Archie, Logan, Lawson, Sonny, Levi, Chance, and Beaudon.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 16, at 10:00 a.m. at Ryssby Church, 9000 N. 63rd Street, Longmont, CO 80503. In honor of Dan’s warm and humble spirit, the family invites everyone to attend in casual attire.
