Charles Henry Barndt, age 90, of Wayne, Ohio passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at the Wood County Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on July 8, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Harry Clinton & Florence Almeda (Barron) Barndt. Charlie married Barbara Louise Seifert on April 15, 1959, in Springfield, Ohio, and she preceded him in passing on January 31, 2023.
Surviving Charlie are his children Doug (Lisa) Barndt, Dave (Leslie) Barndt, both of Wayne, Dianne (Mark Barbour) Barndt of Bowling Green; grandchildren, Brian (Jessica) Barndt, Dannielle (Kirk) Sidle, Mackenzie Cherry, Justin (Kathryn) Barndt, Amanda Barndt, Madeline Cherry, Taylor (Bryan) Melcher, Ellyse Cherry, Isaac Cherry; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Bryan & Chance Henry Sidle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry & Florence; loving wife, Barb; sisters, Phyllis J. Cotton, Vivian E. Anderson; and brothers, John R. Barndt & Edwin L. Barndt.
Charlie was a 1950 graduate of Collinwood High School in Cleveland, and then served his Country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He then attended Ohio University where he met his future wife, Barb, while working in the Sorority House, and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958. Charlie finished his schooling at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1959, and then worked as an Intern at Flynn-Froelick Funeral Home in Cleveland from September 1959-1961. Charlie & Barb purchased Baublitz Funeral Home in Wayne, in October,1961, and officially moved to Wayne, Ohio on October 23, 1961.
They were the proud owners of Barndt Funeral Home from 1961-1994, when they turned the business over to their son, Doug.
Charlie was a member of the Wayne United Methodist Church, and the Albert Bowe American Legion Post #338 in Bradner. Among many hobbies over the years, he enjoyed bowling, golfing, coaching his children’s little league teams, spending time with his friends, and telling jokes every minute he could. Charlie will always be remembered for his ornery personality, his iconic mustache, always having a cigar in his mouth (or in his later years, a toothpick), and for being elected the first Sore Head of Wayne in 1977. His greatest love in life though, was spending time with his family and attending all his children & grandchildren’s activities as they were his pride and joy.
Friends will be received from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2023, at Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Tamara Bennett & Pastor Vernagaye Sullivan officiating.
Burial will be at Graham Cemetery near Wayne with Military Honors performed by the Albert Bowe American Legion Post #338.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wayne Public Library and The Victory Center of Toledo.
