Melvin R McDonald

Melvin R. McDonald, age 83, of Bowling Green, Ohio, formerly of Wayne, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was born on December 3, 1941, in Bloomdale to the late Paul & Flora (Steiner) McDonald. Mel married Nancy L. Hummel on February 15, 1964, in Wayne, and she preceded him in passing on May 13, 2024.

Surviving Mel is his daughter, Terri (Tom) Schaller of Perrysburg, Ohio; sons, Daniel (Jennifer) McDonald of Denver, Colorado, Steven (Jennifer) McDonald of Kent, Ohio; sisters, Claudell Wolford of Pemberville, Kay (Leonard) Chapman of Bloomdale, Carol (Vaughn) Wright of Bloomdale; grandchildren, Bryan (Elizabeth) Schaller, Heather Schaller, Jordan McDonald, Kaylee McDonald, Jacob McDonald, Sean McDonald, Zachary McDonald, Nick (Julita) Ellis, Samantha Ellis; great-grandsons, Case & Greyson Schaller. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Nancy; sister, Helen Kauffman; and brothers, Robert, Lewis, and LeRoy McDonald.

Mel was a 1959 graduate of Bloomdale High School and then served his Country proudly in the United States Army. He worked at General Dynamics in Lima, retiring after 30+ years, and was a dedicated employee at Barndt Funeral Home for many years. Mel was a member of the American Legion Post #539 in North Baltimore, and among many hobbies over the years, he enjoyed golfing, playing cards, bowling, and going to the casino. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and Cleveland Indians fan, and he had a passion for coaching his grandchildren’s sports teams.

Friends will be received from 12-2 PM on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio, where a Celebration of Life Service will begin on Friday at 2 PM with Pastor Tamara Bennett officiating. Burial will be at Graham Cemetery near Wayne, with Military Honor’s performed by the AMVETS Honor Detail.
