BG Area Community Bands to host free concert, ‘Visions of America’

The Bowling Green Area Community Bands invites the community to its free concert on Sunday, May 10, “Visions of America: Connection Points,” in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The concert will be held at 4 p.m. at the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center located at 540 W. Poe Road. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. The event and parking are free and open to the public. Due to construction, attendees are asked to enter from Poe Road and follow directions to the parking lot on the northwest side of campus.

Under the baton of conductor Catherine Lewis, the band will open the show with “The Star-Spangled Banner;” “America Exultant March,” by Henry Fillmore, arranged by Andrew Glover; and “Excursion! – A Ride on the Erie Canal,” by Lisa Galvin, with soloists Jennifer Amon on piccolo, Lynn Zuercher on bassoon, Andrew Kalmar on tuba, Michael Borjas on euphonium, and Teresa Disbrow on clarinet.

The band will next play “Shenandoah,” by Frank Ticheli, with soloists Kim Kucharski, Nancy Clabaugh, and Heidi Reger on flute, Rob Snyder on alto sax, Lily Young on trumpet; and “Godspeed, John Glenn,” by BGSU alum Ryan Nowlin, with soloists Kim Kucharski on flute, Erin Crawford on piccolo, Brian Bushong on trumpet, and John Kloor on trombone.

Next, BiG Band BG will come on stage and play “Sir Duke,” by Stevie Wonder and arranged by Phillip Mossman, with Ken Zeurker on guitar as a soloist. Next, the band will play “Does This Make Me Look Phat?” by Gordon Goodwin, with soloists John Skolits on tenor sax and David Middleton on drums. Its final song will be “Hit the Bricks” by Gordon Goodwin, with soloist Dan Schelhaus on alto sax.

Dr. Bruce Moss, emeritus music education faculty member and director of bands at Bowling Green State University, will be the band’s featured guest conductor for this concert and will lead the band through “Chorale and Shaker Dance,” by John P. Zdechlik, with soloists Erin Crawford on piccolo, Kim Kucharski on flute, and Mark Patton on saxophone. Next will be “Simple Gifts,” by Joseph Brackett and arranged by Noah D. Taylor. The final song Moss will conduct will be “America, The Beautiful,” by Samuel Augustus Ward and arranged by Carmen Dragon.

Lewis will return to conduct the final song, “Who’s Who In Navy Blue,” by John Philip Sousa. Sousa was known as the “March King” and wrote over 136 marches, including “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The Bowling Green Area Community Bands will be joined by members from the Bowling Green High School band to play “America, the Beautiful” and “Who’s Who In Navy Blue.”
