Bowling Green High School’s DECA chapter has successfully raised awareness about breast cancer this fall through a series of impactful initiatives during school sporting events.

Evan Meyer, Owen Cleland, and the Penta-BGHS DECA chapter have worked to show support for those affected by breast cancer and fundraise for cancer research. As the “Fight Cancer” campaign draws to a close, Bowling Green DECA capped off its effortdmwith a grand finale “Pink Out” event at the BGHS boys basketball game on Jan. 28.

Throughout the season, seniors Evan and Owen partnered with school administrators, local businesses, and the community to host various awareness events at sporting matches, including soccer, football, hockey, and basketball games.

Students sold pink merchandise, distributed educational materials, and encouraged attendees to wear pink to honor loved ones, and show solidarity for breast cancer patients and survivors.

The campaign has not only raised significant funds but also sparked important conversations about the impact of breast cancer. In addition, the Fight Cancer campaign honored a local kindergarten teacher and breast cancer survivor Allison Nickey during a puck drop on Jan. 12 at the annual Jamie Ruffner Fight Cancer BGHS hockey game.

Additionally, proceeds from pink bracelet sales and other merchandise will benefit the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation. The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation is committed to revolutionizing cancer care by funding cutting-edge research that focuses on treating the cancer while sparing the patient from harsh side effects associated with conventional cancer treatments.

Evan and Owen selected the Scott Hamilton Cares Foundations as the organization that their donations would benefit from after they heard Scott Hamilton speak to BGHS students and they learned about the positive impact his organization is making in cancer care.

“We are incredibly proud of the efforts Evan and Owen have put into this campaign,” said Cara Maxey, DECA Chapter Advisor at Bowling Green High School. “They have shown great dedication in raising awareness and creating a meaningful impact on our community. The ‘Pink Out’ event will be a perfect way to bring their campaign to a close, but the conversation and support for breast cancer research must continue.”

The Bowling Green DECA chapter hopes that this initiative will inspire others to get involved in raising awareness and supporting those affected by breast cancer. BGHS DECA members, with the support of our community members, have raised over $2,300 in donations.
