The Bowling Green Swim Club broke two conference records in the Greater Northwest Ohio Aquatic Conference Championships over the weekend (July 13-14)and won their 14th consecutive championship.
According to Carolyn Strunk, head coach of the Bowling Green club, the Bowling Green Gators earned their 47th championship title in the conference that includes teams from Bryan, Defiance area, Napoleon, Putnam County, and Wauseon. The club has been competing in the conference for 53 years and has won the championship every year since 2010. There was no conference swim meet in 2020 because of COVID.
The women’s 15 years and older 200-yard medley team of Colleen Hildebrand, Abby Leatherman, Maggie Layne and Alayna Mahan swam in 1:56.90 to beat the 1998 conference record of 1:57.05 by a Napoleon Aquatic Club team.
Colleen Hildebrand broke the conference record in the women’s 15-16 years-old 100-yard backstroke race. She raced in 1:02.20 to best the 31-year record of 1:02.36 set in 1993 by E. Wernecke.
The Gators tallied a total of 2,806.50 points to win the meet which was held at the Bowling Green City Pool. Napoleon Aquatic Club placed second with 1,926 points, followed by Bryan Swim Team with 1,770 points, Putnam County YMCA Swim Team with 884 points, DAYS Blue Dolphins (Defiance Area) with 679.50 points, and Wauseon Wahoos with 474.50 points.
“Overall, our seniors did a great job of showing good leadership skills, helping the coaches with the younger swimmers and making sure they are where they need to be,” Strunk said.
She credited the “well-established senior practice group,” for those swimmers in 7th through 12th grades. “They are committed to practicing and looking to get better at swimming whether they are using it to build upon for the next season or to gain more confidence as they go into high school, knowing they can compete at that level,” she said.
Strunk thanked the coaching staff and the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation staff for making sure everything went well for the weekend meet. Because Bowling Green hosts the meet every seven years, it takes a lot of teamwork to manage all the logistics, she said.
She also praised the 12-year-old and under swimmers for listening to the coaches to learn what is needed for the competition. “They did what was needed in the water to be as prepared as they could be to help the team win another title,” she said.
