A Bowling Green man was charged with theft after reportedly scanning Kool-Aid packets at the self checkout rather than some of the more expensive items in his cart.
The Bowling Green Police Division was dispatched Thursday at 6:46 p.m. to Walmart, 131 W. Gypsy Lane Road, after a customer was stopped for possible theft.
A Walmart asset protection person told police that Kevin Underwood, 46, of Gorrell Avenue, Bowling Green, had scanned and purchased some items in his shopping cart but not all of them.
Police were given two receipts – one with 15 items totaling $83.83, that Underwood had purchased, and another with nine items totaling $77.80 that he had in his cart but reportedly did not pay for.
The items were an assortment of painting supplies and a dog treat.
Underwood reportedly told police that he came to Walmart for cat food and other items which he had enough money to buy. But while in the store, Underwood told police that he remembered he had to get some paint supplies that he had run out of the day before. However, he didn’t have enough money for all of the items.
So at the self checkout, Underwood stated he scanned some items normally and sometimes he ran a 24 cents Kool-Aid packet underneath some of the more expensive items. This made it look and sound like he scanned an item.
In total he attempted to walk out with nine items totaling $77.80. According to the Walmart asset protection person, the final price was $76.36 because Underwood had scanned the same Kool-Aid packet several times. Therefore he “overpaid” on the items he legally purchased, which was deducted from the theft amount.
The asset protection person told police that Walmart has video of Underwood stealing several times in the past. Underwood was charged with theft, and was ordered to not enter any Walmart or Sam’s Club locations in the future.
