Bowling Green State University has seen “a slight increase” in COVID-19 over the last week.
The current dashboard shows 37 cases – 33 students, one faculty, and three staff – have contracted the virus. That’s an increase from 21 last week and 25 the week before.
In his weekly update, BGSU’s Chief Health Officer Ben Batey said “it wasn’t a huge increase but enough for us to start taking notice as we look over the next couple weeks.”
The uptick in cases wasn’t surprising he said, given the increases in cases across Wood County and across Ohio.
Batey urged students to continue to take precautions – wearing masks and keeping their social circles small – as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. University officials want to avoid a student having to quarantine or isolate instead of going home.
The university will be adding testing capabilities on campus so students can get tested before they leave campus, he said.
The campus currently has 30 active cases, one faculty three staff, and 27 students.
Seven residential students are currently in isolation and 12 are quarantined in residence halls.
BGSU has had 566 since the beginning of the semester – 549 students, three faculty, and 14 staff.
The university conducted 131 surveillance tests between Oct. 26-30 random surveillance tests, and found no cases.
It also conducted 556 tests on asymptomatic individuals in targeted groups and found two cases, a 0.3 percent positivity test. Over the semester, 3738 random surveillance and targeted tests have been done with 29 cases found, a 0.8 percent positivity rate.
