Charles W ‘Charlie’ Reynolds

Charles W. Reynolds, the long-time Wood County boy’s basketball coach who found success at the former Milton and Westwood high school’s in the 1950’s and ‘60’s before building what would become a family tradition at Elmwood, where, in the spring of 1976, he guided the Royals to a birth in the state’s Sweet Sixteen- a feat his son would duplicate as coach of the school nearly three decades later- passed away Tuesday in Bowling Green with his family by his side. He was 95.

Charlie was born May 13, 1924 at home in Wayne, Ohio to the late John and Carrie (Dauterman) Reynolds. He married Marcie (Griner) and she survives in Wayne. 


Charlie served his country proudly in the United States Army in France from 1944-1946.

He obtained his master’s degree from BGSU in 1967 and went on to teach for 32 years. He began his teaching career at Milton high school in 1950 and went on to teach at Westwood high school. He taught at Bowling Green City School from 1966-1967 and finished his career at Elmwood Schools. Charlie served as athletic director and coached basketball and baseball for both Bowling Green and Elmwood. He was a farmer and worked for Sun Seed for 15 years.

Charlie attended Dayspring Church in Bowling Green and enjoyed shopping and going to dinner with his wife , Marcie. He loved attending the Wood County Fair. His greatest joy in life came from the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved attending all of their events and was extremely proud of all of their accomplishments. 

Along with his wife Marcie, Charlie is survived by his children Vicky (Russ) Griggs of Swanton, Ohio, Linda (Dave) Gross of Cygnet, Ohio and Doug (Debbie) Reynolds of Portage, Ohio, step-children Robert Long of Wayne, Ohio and Melissa (Nathan) Phillips of Deshler, Ohio. He is also survived by his grandchildren Michelle (Naf) Visser, Jennifer (Matt) Reynolds, Christopher Gross, Brittany Gross, Diondra (Dave) Steckel, Danielle Reynolds, Dustin Reynolds, Ashleigh (Nick) Hotz, Brook (Alex) Jones and Lexi Phillips, 9 great-grandchildren and 1st wife and mother of his children Mary Reynolds. 

He was preceded in death by his brothers James Reynolds, Raymond Reynolds and Lawrence Reynolds. 

Visitation will be held on Friday July 12, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 West Wooster St. His funeral service will be held on Saturday July 13, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at Dayspring Church, 17360 N. Dixie Hwy. Bowling Green, Ohio 43402. Pastor Charlie Winter will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Portage, Ohio where full Military Honors will be rendered by the Wood County Honor Detail. 

Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to Dayspring Church, Bridge Hospice or the Elmwood Basketball Program.
