Students from Elmwood Elementary Student Council have been partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio for nearly 10 years.
Located in Toledo, Ronald McDonald House Charities’ mission is to support and provide family housing and resources while their sick child receives treatment.
This partnership started with an annual holiday pajama day when elementary students donated $1 to participate.
Elmwood Elementary then added a large can tab collection effort each school year as well as a “pay it forward” from Scholastic Book Fairs. Ronald McDonald House Charities recycles can tabs, earning funds to keep their kitchen stocked.
Scholastic partners with elementary librarian Tina Farabee to give back a portion of book fair sales for student council members to select books to donate. These books go to children or siblings of children receiving treatment who are staying at Ronald McDonald House.
Student council members Logan Johnson, Liam Bennett, Kimberly Heiser, Piper Stearns, Maci Dennis, Jack Good, Avery Bishop, Bronx Swiecicki, and Jarrett Miller take their own lunch and recess times to lead these service projects. Their adviser is Elaine Podach.
