It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Esequiel “Zeke” Varela Jr., who left us on February 26, 2025, at the age of 78. He was born on July 22, 1946 to the late Esequiel Sr. and Maria (Mendieta) Varela in La Mesa, TX.
Zeke is survived by his beloved wife, Alma (Costilla) Varela; his sons Gabe (Pam) Varela and Zeke Varela III; grandchildren: Gavin, Austin, Makayla, Zach, Courtney and Jacob, 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Maria Langhurst, Yolanda Montelongo, Minni Toth, and Irene Curry. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Rafela, and a grandson Andre.
Zeke graduated from Otsego High School and worked in the quality control department at Cooper Standard until he retired. His passions included coaching baseball, playing golf, and hitting the bowling lanes. He was also known for his love of Mexican music and being a very good dancer. Zeke was a valued member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, where he found community and connection.
A Memorial Gathering will take place on March 7, 2025 at Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home & Crematory from 10:00 AM until the time of his Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM. A graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery will immediately follow. A Luncheon will held at The Fraternal Order of Eagles in Bowling Green after the burial.
