Free gas cap testing and replacement of leaky caps offered in BG by TMACOG

Drivers are being offered free gas cap testing and replacement of leaky caps in Bowling Green on Monday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in BGSU Lot 13, near the football stadium.

The Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments staff will be doing quick compression tests to make sure gas caps are sealing properly. Motorists with leaking caps will be eligible to receive a free replacement.

Those stopping by will have a chance to win an electric lawnmower.

TMACOG offers this service each summer as a way of promoting air quality awareness and replacing faulty gas caps that are contributing to pollution by leaking fuel vapors.

If it doesn’t have a tight seal, a loose cap could be costing up to two tanks of gas each year.

Older vehicles are more likely to have a poorly sealed cap, but any vehicle could be leaking. A loose gas cap may trigger the check engine light, so if the light turns on randomly or right after filling up, the cap may need to be replaced.
