Great Art Escape celebrates the season for all the senses

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) invites the community to celebrate the holiday season with the annual Great Art Escape. Visitors will find something for everyone with an array of events Dec. 28 thrugh Dec. 30. 

Enjoy performances in the galleries; activities in the family center and glassblowing demonstrations in the hot shop. Also, tour State of The Art: Revealing Works From The Conservation Vault and Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris, two exhibitions organized by the Toledo Museum of Art.

The events are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 28 and 29 and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 30.

DEC. 28 

Giant Game of Chess
11 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Great Gallery 
This game is all about strategy! Drop by the Great Gallery to challenge yourself with a giant game of chess.

Family Center: Winter Wonderland 
11 a.m.-5 p.m. 
Show off your creativity with winter-themed arts and crafts when the Toledo Museum of Art transforms the Family Center into a winter wonderland. There will be fun for children of all ages.

Paper Cutting, Cocoa & Cookies with Mary Gaynier 
11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the GlasSalon 
Learn the art of paper cutting with local artist Mary Gaynier and display your original paper snowflakes in TMA’s Glass Pavilion! End the afternoon with a prize if you can find Scissor Blizzard, Gaynier’s abominable snowman, in the Glass Pavilion.

Matinee Movie: ‘A Christmas Story’
Noon-2 p.m. in the Little Theater 
Pre-registration required 
Christmas isn’t the same without this 1983 classic. Follow young Ralphie Parker on his journey to make sure he finds a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree on Christmas morning in this heartwarming, hysterical and sweetly nostalgic film.

Drawing in the Galleries 
1-4 p.m. in Classic Court 
Find inspiration in the Toledo Museum of Art’s collection and create an original work of art with help from the Museum’s instructors. All supplies are provided. No experience is necessary.

Art of Glassblowing Demonstrations 
2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion Hot Shop 
Watch TMA’s team of studio glass artists create whimsical pieces inspired by classic children’s stories. The artwork will be available for purchase after the demonstration.

Dutch Cabinet Organ Performance: Pamela Stover 
2 p.m. in Gallery 24
Beautiful music will fill the galleries when Pamela Stover plays the Toledo Museum of Art’s 1785 Dutch cabinet organ. Stover is a member of the Toledo chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Docent Led Highlight Tour 
2 -3 p.m., meet in the Herrick Lobby 
Explore the Toledo Museum of Art with our docents and learn more about works in the collection during the winter wonderland highlights tour.

Deck the Halls: Hector Mendoza 
3 p.m. in Gallery 1 
Music and art come together during this afternoon performance. As you tour the galleries, enjoy the sweet sounds of Latin guitarist Hector Mendoza.

Encore Presentation: ‘A Christmas Story’
4-6 p.m. in the Little Theater
Pre-registration required 
Ralphie Parker has one thing on his Christmas list: A Red Ryder BB gun. Watch has the young boy makes his case to his parents, Santa Claus and anyone else who will listen in A Christmas Story, a 1983 holiday favorite set in the 1940s.

Flashlight Tours 
5-6 p.m., meet in the Herrick Lobby 
$20 for members, $30 for non-members and $13 for ages 5-17
Registration is required
Lights out! Experience the gallery in a unique and memorable way during a docent-led flashlight tour of Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris. Complimentary flashlights are included.

A winter wonderland awaits in the Toledo Museum of Art’s Family Center. Find fun for the whole family with winter-themed crafts.

Paper Cutting, Cocoa & Cookies with Mary Gaynier 
11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the GlasSalon

Story Time with Merrill Rainey 
Noon-1 p.m. in the Green Room
Merrill Rainey, a local author and Illustrator, will read his two newest books. Enjoy “Roar! I’m a Dinosaur” and “Oink! I’m a Pig.” With interactive activities and simple rhymes, this story time will surely segue into playtime.

Deck the Halls: Raymond Flowers 
1 p.m. in Gallery 31 
Violist Raymond Flowers will fill the galleries with music during an afternoon performance. Enjoy the seasonal sounds as you experience the artworks on view.

Art of Glassblowing Demonstrations 
2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion Hot Shop 
See pieces of your childhood in glass as the Toledo Museum of Art’s studio glass artists create whimsical artworks inspired by children’s stories. The objects will be available for purchase after the demonstration.

Dutch Cabinet Organ Performance: Terrance Jankowski
2 p.m. in Gallery 24 
Have you imagined how the Toledo Museum of Art’s 1785 Dutch cabinet organ sounds? The wait is over. Terrance Jankowski, a member of the Toledo chapter of the American Guild of Organists, will bring the instrument to life during an afternoon performance.

Docent-led Highlight Tour 
2-3 p.m., meet in the Herrick Lobby 
Explore the Toledo Museum of Art’s expansive collection during a docent-led winter wonderland highlights tour.

Deck the Halls: JP Dynasty 
3 p.m. in Classic Court 
Immerse yourself in the rhythmic sounds of African drummers when JP Dynasty performs in the gallery.

Matinee Movie: ‘Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas’
4-6 p.m. in the Little Theater 
Pre-registration is recommended, limited same-day tickets will be available
Madea heads to rural town for Christmas, and you’re invited along for the wild ride. Enjoy lots of laughs and a bit of wisdom with this 2013 film.

Flashlight Tours 
5-6 p.m., meet in the Herrick Lobby
$20 for members, $30 for non-members and $13 for youth

Illuminate the vibrant colors of the works featured in Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris during a docent-led flashlight tour. Complimentary flashlights are included.

Flameworking: Candy Cane Mini-Class
6-9 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion Hot Shop 
$70 for members and $80 for non-members 
Registration is required
Learn the fundamentals of working with borosilicate glass and discover traditional cane making techniques to make your own glass candy cane. No experience is necessary.

1-3 p.m. in the Little Theater
Pre-registration is recommended, limited same-day tickets will be available 
The Grinch attempts to steal Christmas joy in Whoville with the help of his loyal dog and reindeer. His cover blown by an earnest young girl, Cindy-Lou.

Drawing in the Galleries 
1-4 p.m. in the Canaday Gallery 
Create an original drawing while surrounded by the works on view in State of the Art: Revealing Works from the Conservation Vault. TMA instructors will be available to lend a hand. All supplies are provided. No experience is necessary.

Art of Glassblowing Demonstrations 
2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion Hot Shop 
Watch as the Toledo Museum of Art’s studio glass artists create whimsical pieces inspired by popular childhood stories. The artworks will be available for purchase after the demonstration. 

Dutch Cabinet Organ Performance: Dennis Blubaugh
2 p.m. in Gallery 24 
This is the concert you’ve been waiting for! Enjoy the sound of the pipes from the Museum’s 1785 Dutch cabinet organ during a performance by Dennis Blubaugh, a member of the Toledo chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Deck the Halls: Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra 
4:30 p.m. in the Cloister Gallery
The majestic sounds of string instruments will fill the gallery when the Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra plays holiday favorites. You’ll surely leave the Museum singing!

Evening Movie: How the Grinch Stole Christmas 
5-7 p.m. in the Little Theater 
Pre-registration is recommended, limited same-day tickets available 
As Christmas joy abounds in Whoville, the Grinch plots to ruin the Whos’ seasonal plans. The green monster’s plans hit a snag when a Who girl blows his cover, befriends him and sets out to introduce him to the magic of Christmas. Jim Carrey stars in the 2000 film.

Deck the Halls: Aha! Indian Dance
6:30 p.m. in Wolfe Gallery 
Immerse yourself in an evening of entertainment when Aha! Indian Dance performs in the gallery.
