Habitat for Humanity of Wood County is looking for help building stronger foundations for families in the community.
In preparation for the organization’s annual fall gala, Habitat is sharing a family’s story about their journey of hope and home.
The Dustin and Amanda Bumpus family had always cherished their life in Wood County, where the parents and three teenage children found joy in community and connections.
But seven years ago, their world turned upside down when Amanda was diagnosed with cancer. Forced to leave her job, the family’s financial stability quickly unraveled, and a series of unfortunate events eventually left them homeless.
After months of struggle, the Bumpus family found temporary shelter in a rental home. However, the house – with mold, a leaking foundation and limited space – was far from ideal. With only one closet for a family of five, their cramped quarters took a physical and emotional toll.
One day, Amanda Bumpus came across a story about a local family who had become Habitat for Humanity homeowners. It was a spark that ignited their journey toward home ownership. The possibility of a new home – one free from leaks and mold, and big enough for their family – became real.
Dustin and Amanda Bumpus applied to Habitat, knowing that it would provide them with the stability they needed.
Today, their future home is being built in Wayne by Habitat for Humanity of Wood County, with the help of corporate and community partners. By December, the Bumpus family will move into their new house.
Habitat has become a beacon of hope for many like the Bumpus family, helping to build 54 homes in Wood County and completing numerous repair projects to others. Through partnerships with volunteers, community organizations and donors, Habitat empowers families to achieve their dreams of homeownership. Families receive an affordable mortgage, and participate in the building process, helping to create the homes they will live in.
Habitat for Humanity is asking that those who want to help transform lives like the Bumpus family should get involved. One way to help is by attending the Habitat for Humanity Fall Gala on Nov. 22, from 6 to 10 p.m., at Nazareth Hall, 21211 W. River Road, Grand Rapids. RSVPs are required by Nov. 15.
