The Bowling Green Holiday Parade has been canceled for 2020 because of concerns about COVID-19.
“The decision was made after much consideration for the safety and well-being of the members of our community,” the chamber explained in a press release.
Making the call were the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Board, the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce Foundation Board, and the Parade Committee.
Mary Hinkelman, the chamber executive director, stated: “The BG Community Holiday Parade is one of the most exciting events we have in our community and to say that Santa won’t be coming to town is not what anyone wants to hear, especially when the Holiday Parade has been a tradition for over 60 years. We never want to be the bearer of bad news without being able to present a silver lining. We are looking into other options and will make our plans public when we have details. ”
The BG Community Holiday Parade traditionally takes place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year and has been broadcast Live with WTOL for the past several years.
This is the third time in seven years the parade has been canceled. A downpour canceled the parade in 2017 and inclement weather also canceled the event in 2014.
This is the second major Chamber sponsored festivities canceled this year because of the pandemic.
The July 4 Fireworks were originally postponed until Labor Day weekend, and then were canceled.
